This much loved and recognised bird is the largest member of the kingfisher family, but unlike most of its relatives, it is sedentary and occupies the same territory all year round.

Not particularly selective feeders, the diet of snakes, lizards, rodents and the odd small bird is probably best known, but these birds actually live mainly on insects

Kookaburras are most often seen perched on a favourite branch, from where they swoop down onto prey below.

The well known raucous laughter is most often heard at dusk, just before the spring breeding season, when family groups are busy adjusting their territorial boundaries.

Kookaburras are very social birds, forming large extended family groups, all helping to raise the young. The pair will raise two or three young that are fed by their parents for a further eight to thirteen weeks after fledging. In favourable conditions Kookaburras may live for up to 20 years.
