These gregarious medium sized blue and red parrots prefer rainforest, and tall timbered eucalypt forest, but can also frequent farms, and suburban gardens.

Found in suitable habitat ranging from SA around the east coast of NSW through to southern QLD, these birds feed on seed, fruit, flowers and insects, preferring the seeds of eucalyptus.

Very vocal birds, their range includes shrill short notes, bell like whistles, and a rich musical chatter.

The pairing of sexes appears to be permanent, and breeding occurs from September through to February.

This species nests almost exclusively in tree hollows, and although still common, Crimson Rosellas (in common with other Rosella species) are suffering from habitat loss, in particular the loss of mature hollow bearing trees.

You can help these, and all other Rosellas by building a nestbox. To find out more visit our 'Building a nestbox for Crimson Rosellas' factsheet here
